Tories to hold party conference in Birmingham up to 2026
The Conservative Party has announced three of its next six annual party conferences will take place in the West Midlands.
Birmingham will host the party conference in 2022, 2024 and 2026. The conference has alternated between Birmingham’s International Convention Centre (ICC) and Manchester Central since 2008.
“The Conservative Party’s decision to return to Birmingham for three further annual conferences is fantastic news and a tremendous boost for our business tourism sector,” Meet Birmingham’s visitor economy business development manager, Stephanie Mynett said.
“It builds on our Convention Bureau’s great working relationship with the Party and underlines the Conservatives’ trust in the West Midlands to come together and consistently deliver a successful event.”
Mynett added that political conferences are important for the region’s hospitality venues, with previous political events having generated an estimated economic impact of up to £20m for Birmingham and the West Midlands.
The region is also set to welcome the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the UK city of Culture 2021 in Coventry, both events setting the West Midlands in a strong position to boost the economic recovery of the region’s business tourism sector.
The announcement to return to the West Midlands comes just weeks after the Tories were forced to cancel the live 2020 party conference due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The conference was set to take place on 4-7 October at ICC Birmingham.
However, the party announced that the conference will go ahead as a predominantly online event.
A statement on the Conservatives’ website said: “Following discussions with our partners we have decided that the Conservative Party will host a Virtual Conference and move most of our conference in October online.
“We are excited to be working with our partners and suppliers to produce the Virtual Conference and will provide further details shortly, with the full agenda going live in early September.
“The Virtual Conference will provide a fantastic opportunity for members to share ideas and hear from voices across the Party.”
