Scottish Event Campus serves up sustainable food strategy

The countdown to COP26 is on and the host venue Scottish Event Campus (SEC) has revealed its new sustainably-led food strategy.

Ahead of the major United Nations Climate Change conference headed to Glasgow later this year, the SEC has unveiled a sustainable food and beverage strategy with a pledge to use 80 per cent Scottish-sourced produce.

The strategy, which SEC developed with catering partner Levy + I, a subsidiary of Compass Group, pledges to champion high quality, environmentally friendly local suppliers in areas such as fruit and vegetables, meat and bread and will have a stronger focus on providing plant-based options.

By 2023, SEC aims to only use packaging that is reusable or recyclable and by 2025, the venue has targets to reduce kitchen waste to less than 1 per cent. In the meantime, food waste generated at SEC will be diverted from landfill to anaerobic digestion processing to create biogas or digestate which will help grown crops and feed animals.

“While we recognise that we can continue to do more to improve the environment we all share, we are proud to have a strong and ambitious strategy in place to help us champion the very best of sustainably sourced Scottish produce on the international stage,” SEC conference sales director, Kathleen Warden said.

Levy UK + I business director, Kevin Watson added: “The amazing new food strategy that we have created with SEC is a world-class example as to how the conference and events industry can achieve greater sustainability and reduce food waste in catering and hospitality.

“It fully complements our Levy Cares commitments which sit at the very heart of the sustainable and ethical approach we adopt in all our work – from the food we serve, the teams we work with and the communities we support. We are delighted that SEC is hosting COP26 later this year and feel it is the perfect event to showcase how food strategies like ours can play an instrumental role in combatting climate change.”

The new food strategy will be in full swing when the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), taking place between 1–12 November 2021, arrives at SEC.
