Reducing employee stress top of the agenda, research finds

Employers in the meetings and event industry are taking an active role in reducing employee stress and improving wellbeing, new research suggests.

The latest study from the mental health and wellbeing training provider Stress Matters, in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire and Walters Research and Consulting, reveals mental health and wellbeing is high on the employer’s agenda.

The key findings from the study indicate that 53 per cent of respondents believed that the businesses they work for have taken a more active role in trying to improve their wellbeing in the last 12 months.

The study was rolled out online to meetings and events professionals and was conducted between spring and summer in 2021.

Proving that mental health and wellbeing is more than a fleeting tick-box exercise, 81 per cent of respondents said they would put a business’s approach to workplace wellbeing in the top five reasons to select a new employer.

Stress Matters founder Laura Capell-Abra said: “I am over the moon that employees are feeling so much more supported. It has been an incredibly challenging time for the industry and whilst there is still a lot more work to be done, this is really encouraging to see. It is also no surprise that individuals are focusing more on their own wellbeing and making career choices based on this.

However, while mental health and wellbeing is being taken seriously for many survey respondents, the results strongly indicated that conference professionals felt ‘substantially’ more supported by their employers than those in the exhibitions industry.

Capell-Abra added: “Employers now need to up their game to show employees how they are being more people‐first and prove that their efforts haven’t been to simply tick a box.”

To help encourage positive mental health and wellbeing across the industry, Stress Matters is offering free access to its two online courses from Monday 11 October to Monday 18 October.

These courses are: Mental health and stress management for eventprofs course or Designing and delivering mentally safe events.

The courses can accessed here using the discount code: WMHD2021. Each course takes around three hours to complete and are recognised by the International Stress Management Association.
