MPI cancels European conference due to Omicron

Meeting Professionals International’s (MPI) European Meetings and Events Conference (EMEC) is the latest victim of the Omicron Covid variant.

The conference, which was due to take place in Brighton from 27 February to 1 March, has cited “travel restrictions and growing concerns about the Omicron variant” as the main factors behind the decision to postpone.

“After discussion with our partners and Host Committee members, we’ve determined that continuing to plan for EMEC Brighton would not be a responsible action to take amidst the uncertain landscape unfolding largely due to the Omicron variant,” said Annette Gregg, MPI’s senior vice president of experience.

“The pandemic has underscored the need to review and assess each event fluidly, adapting plans to ensure the well-being, health and safety of all involved in our events.”

Richard Allchild, head of sales North America, IMEX Group, and EMEC Brighton host committee co-chair added: “While we are disappointed to postpone EMEC Brighton, each member among our Host Committee felt it was the right thing to do given the circumstances.

“EMEC is the industry’s premier European event and, above all, its intent is to provide fertile learning and innovation grounds for this international community. This current scenario would simply undermine our ability to deliver the experience so many have come to expect.”

MPI’s postponement of EMEC follows suit with other major conferences and meetings around the world. In December, the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) announced it had postponed its January 2022 Global Conference in Dublin and IBT Berlin cancelled its in-person conference scheduled for March 2022.

The World Economic Forum also deferred its Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland until early summer in 2022, citing Omicron as the reason. The meeting was supposed to take place between 17-21 January 2022.
