London to host the 2019 European Cities Marketing Summer School

London has been chosen to host the 2019 European Cities Marketing Summer School (ECM), the first time since the programme was founded in 1987.

ECM has been running for 33 years and continues to give young people an insight into a career in the business tourism industry. This year’s programme will be managed by the London Convention Bureau and European Cities Marketing. It will welcome 50 students from across Europe to learn from meetings industry experts, attend practical workshops and discuss some of the latest trends that influence the global tourism sector.

Topics covered in the programme include acquisition of international events, sales and marketing strategies including the use of social media, storytelling through the lens of a journalist and understanding of the web of client decision making.

Barbara Jamison, head of business development for Europe at London & Partners and host of this year’s ECM Summer School said: “London is a truly global city and we look forward to welcoming students from across Europe to London for the 2019 ECM Summer School.

“London is a diverse, cosmopolitan city with over 230 languages spoken and around 380,000 students from all over the world choosing to study here each year. We hope that London will provide a backdrop of discovery and inspiration to the students of the ECM Summer School and the perfect springboard for a career in business tourism.”

The students will also be able to experience London’s meetings industry outside of the programme, as the bulk of the programme will take place at the Tower Hotel, which is in close proximity to the capital’s historic landmarks

London’s popularity among business travellers is one of the reasons the city clenched the contract to host the ECM event, with London welcoming 3.5 million business travellers last year.

James Rees, executive director of ExCeL London and ICCA president said: “It is an honour to be part of the faculty and the host city this year.

“The ECM Summer School always brings together experienced event professionals to share the very best ideas in a spirit of collaboration, giving a global insight into all sectors of our industry and allowing knowledge exchange in a borderless, open forum. I am looking forward to an exciting programme here in London, a world-class city that embraces the meetings industry.”
