HUNGEXPO Budapest announces new congress centre to open in 2021
A significant expansion programme at HUNGEXPO Budapest has begun with a ceremony to mark the laying of the foundation stone for a new congress centre.
The city’s largest exhibition and multifunctional event complex is benefitting from a €170m refurbishment project co-funded by the government and GL Events. As part of the expansion, two new exhibition halls, a new reception building and a congress centre will be built by 2021.
The foundation stone was laid by Deputy Mayor Alexandra Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Gábor Ganczer, CEO of Hungexpo, and Balázs Denhoffer, Managing Director of Expo Park Ltd, on behalf of the state.
The rapid growth of meetings business in Hungary’s capital city made the revitalisation of HUNGEXPO inevitable.
“This is the most important day of our company since its foundation 50 years ago,” said Gábor Ganczer, CEO of Hungexpo, at the celebration. “From 2021 Budapest will benefit from being able to host large and mega size events, which was not possible before. With the current development, the capital will have the opportunity to host almost any size of international congress, conference or exhibition.”
The project will expand the event space with the addition of two new halls. Hall D1 will offer 5,700 sqm of space and Hall D2 7,300 sqm. All existing pavilions will also undergo refurbishment, with new flooring, and the exterior will benefit from a facelift. All eight of the exhibition halls, ranging from 5,000-20,000 sqm and totalling 60,000 sqm of space, will be interconnected with a covered passageway providing exhibition options under one roof. In addition, a brand-new congress centre will be constructed. This three-level centre will include a 2,000 pax auditorium, two dozen smaller meeting rooms plus a 2,300 sqm rooftop terrace.
In addition, the new building will be equipped with the most modern recessed Gala seating system, which will ensure speedy flexibility. It will also have a state-of-the-art audio-visual system.
Hungexpo will continue to run smoothly during the construction period, organising exhibitions, conferences, galas and sports events. The first major international event in the renovated and upgraded Hungexpo Budapest Convention and Exhibition Center will be the International Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for September 2020, which will welcome 15,000 guests. In 2021, Hungexpo Budapest will host the World Hunting and Nature Expo.
