Edinburgh to host Countdown Summit on climate change
The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) will host the international Countdown Summit on climate change on 12-15 October 2021, COVID-19 restrictions permitting.
TED, a non-profit idea-spreading platform and Future Stewards, a climate action group partnered to launch Countdown in October 2020. A global initiative aimed at championing and accelerating solutions to the climate crisis.
The Countdown Summit will bring together mayors and local officials, policymakers, business leaders, indigenous leaders, scientists, philanthropists, artists, youth activists, and key influencers for four days of talks, collaboration, and commitments to action.
Questions around energy, transport, materials, food and nature will form the foundations of the Countdown Summit. The event aims to enhance ‘radical collaboration’ among stakeholders and change-makers to build on work already underway and bring ‘existing, powerful solutions to an even broader audience.’
The EICC will welcome the Countdown Summit just one month before the long-anticipated 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) heads to Glasgow.
“As we transition towards an emergence from this pandemic, there is no greater endorsement of our nation’s credentials than the return of TED and the Countdown Summit to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, just weeks before COP26 in Glasgow”, Neil Brownlee, head of business events at VisitScotland said.
“In Scotland, we believe business events are a catalyst for social and economic transformation; they are a driver to tackle climate change – with the Countdown Summit and TED being true leaders in our global Journey to Change.”
Bruno Giussani, lead curator of Countdown added the group is looking forward to returning to Scotland and the EICC, “a venue that has always provided a perfect setting for impact-focused discussions.”
Further bolstering its commitment to tackling the climate crisis, VisitScotland recently launched the ‘Journey to Change’ campaign which will showcase how business events can drive social and economic transformation.
With a particular focus on fighting climate challenge, the Journey to Change campaign is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aims to demonstrate the impact business events can have in helping tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, including climate change, eradicating poverty and access to renewable energy sources in remote areas.
