Buddies Matter launched to support event industry freelancers
Stress Matters has launched Buddies Matter, a new buddy matching service for event professionals.
The peer to peer support group is being run by Stress Matters and supported by the Event Marketing Association to help support the 100,000 freelancers that are estimated to work across the industry by reducing the isolation freelancers and independents in the industry can feel. The service is free for all and, while aimed at freelancers, all are welcome.
“We hope to create buddies across the industry and globe that can help each other. Events can be isolating when you’re away from home and often family members and friends don’t fully understand the pressure. No one should feel lonely in an industry built on bringing people together,” said Laura Capell-Abra, founder of Stress Matters.
She added that Buddies Matter is not a mentoring scheme; buddies will be found in people with similar experience and responsibilities to allow mutual support to be given.
“The support buddy will be there to talk to when eventprofs need to feel heard, someone who knows a little bit about what they might be going through”, said Capell-Abra. “Buddies won’t be there to fix problems or offer therapy, but simply to offer a sympathetic ear, motivational support and someone to ask ‘How are you actually doing?’.”
Stress Matters’ 2019 workplace wellbeing report found that 28 per cent of event professionals have taken time off work due to a mental health issue and it was found that 88 per cent of respondents believed talking about their worries would help. The 2017 research found that 63 per cent of people who have at least one person at work that they can talk to are 40 per cent less stressed than those who don’t believe anyone else will be able to help. The Buddies Matter scheme is aimed at supporting those that don’t have that one person at work to talk to.
James Hitchen from the Event Marketing Association said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this initiative. Whilst our membership are in-house event planners, we can see how when teams put wellbeing more centrally, the positive impact it can have; independent workers don’t have that infrastructure to rely on and so the Buddies Matter scheme will give them access to that support in a different form.”
To be matched with a buddy complete the form and you will be contacted when a suitable buddy has been found.
Stress Matters was founded in 2017 to support the events industry. Built on three pillars – insights, accountability and support – Stress Matters supports organisations to improve their culture towards wellbeing. This new support programme runs alongside this pledge scheme.
