‘Cataloguing’ the waste in our sector

I fully agree with Jemma Peers about how we can all do better in our events to look after the planet and reduce waste. We took the (small but significant) step some time ago to get rid of delegate packs containing presentations (how many of those do you clear up and pulp after an event?) to very little negative comment. But go to any trade show and there are literally pallet-loads of show 200 page catalogues, and bags stuffed with leaflets being pushed into my hands. How many of these are used/kept more than five days after the show? I would guess less than 5%. I’m sure the massive catalogues are great money earners for the shows, but we have to lead as a sector, and practice what we preach – which event will be our brave trailblazer and ‘do their bit’ for our great planet?
