A sense of belonging: a key strategy for a dynamic future

Cultivating a sense of belonging has never been more vital to the future success of businesses in the events and hospitality industry. Colleagues who saw each other every day in the office have been dispersed by work-from-home policies, furlough, and redundancies. Leaders can help to rebuild these fragmented teams by creating a feeling of belonging.

In fact, belonging topped Deloitte’s latest Global Human Capital Trends survey. 79 per cent of respondents said that fostering belonging in the workplace was important to their company’s success in the next 12–18 months, and 93 per cent agreed that it drives organisational performance.

“When workers appreciate how their individual work helps to advance goals they support and find meaningful, they will likely be more engaged, more motivated, and more likely to perform at a high level,” the report stated.

Deloitte’s research isn’t the only study providing a spotlight on belonging. A recent study by BetterUp revealed that workplace belonging can lead to an estimated 56 per cent increase in job performance and a single incidence of ‘micro-exclusion’ can result in an immediate 25 per cent decline in an individual’s performance on a team project.

Ultimately, these studies show that a sense of belonging is crucial to boost engagement, commitment, motivation, confidence, self-esteem, productivity, pride and positivity among existing team members and potential future team members. It is so important that everyone feels that they belong in their job, they belong as a member of the team and as a valued contributor to the organisation.

After such a disruptive year, many organisations in the events sector may be looking to drive behavioural change and differentiate their organisations. But this is only achievable if all team members believe in the company’s purpose and values and demonstrate this in all they do each day.

Begin fostering a sense of belonging throughout every strand of your event agency or venue team, and, over time, it will become a powerful tool for creating an ambitious and dynamic environment where people and business will both flourish.
